Leadership

Category: Acceptable

Description: "The Leadership competency area addresses the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required of a leader, whether it be a positional leader or a member of the staff, in both an individual capacity and within a process of how individuals work together effectively to envision, plan, and effect change in organizations, and respond to internal and external constituencies and issues” (p. 24).

Activities

  • “Describe how one’s personal values, beliefs, histories, and perspectives inform one’s view of oneself as an effective leader” (p. 24)

    • In my undergraduate career, I completed a 4-year Leadership Development Program based on the Social Change Model of Leadership.  The first year of the program was dedicated to understanding oneself as a leader.

  • “Identify institutional traditions, mores, and organizational structures and how they influence others to act in the organization” (p. 24)

    • In an Assessing Educational Environments course in my Master’s program, I completed an assignment in which I examined the organizational environment of my work unit.

  • “Serve as a mentor for students, new professionals, or those new to the organizational unit” (p. 25)

    • Much of my time at BGSU has been spent developing mentoring relationships with students.  Furthermore, I have assisted new professionals transition into their roles by helping them understand the institution, office, and responsibilities of the advising position.

  • “Give appropriate feedback to colleagues and students on skills they may seek to become more effective leaders” (p. 25)

    • In advising student leaders from World Student Association, Sigma Nu, and Delta Tau Delta at BGSU, I help students understand their strengths and areas for improvement.  I give them informal, yet honest, feedback on ways to be more effective leaders.
